Historical note

Jacob A. Unrau, minister, teacher and farmer, was born on March 2, 1891 at Neuanlage, near Gretna, Manitoba. He was the third of six children born to Albert and Margareta (nee Schellenberg) Unrau. At the age of seven his father died and his stepfather became Heinrich Friesen who was also a widower. Unrau attended school at Neubergthal and then taught school from 1908 until 1919 in the village of Sommerfeld. He was baptized on June 4, 1911 by Aeltester Abram Doerksen and became a member of the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church. Unrau married Anna Kehler on April 10, 1913 and together they had two children, Peter and Elma. Between 1918 and 1952 Unrau farmed in the Rosenheim district. During this time he was elected to the ministry and installed on March 30, 1937 by Aeltester Peter A. Toews. As a minister he saw the church through many changes which came with modernization and managed to alienate neither the young nor the old. In 1952 his first wife died and later that year he married Katherina (Tina) Penner. They retired to Winkler and then to Rosenfeld. During his years of service to the church Unrau held 2,000 services, 324 funerals, and 284 weddings. Jacob A. Unrau died on December 16, 1972.
