Wilhem J. Peters, teacher and later minister, was born on November 28, 1876 in the village of Eichenfeld, Yazykovo Colony, Southern Russia. He was one of ten children born to Jakob and Anganeta (nee Toews) Peters. After attending the village school, Peters went on to complete high school at the Chortitza Zentralschule. He then did two years of pedagogical training and taught in Kornejewko for 12 years. At the age of 20 he was baptized by Isaak Dyck. Five years later he married Helen Heinrichs on January 12, 1902. Their marriage produced ten children, four of which died as children. On November 22, 1920 Peters was ordained to the ministry by Aeltester Heinrich Epp. Following the communist take over of the Russian government Peters and his family decided to immigrate to Canada in 1924. Initially they settled in Crystal City, Manitoba but were forced to move to the village of Chortitza during the depression. There they became members of the Gruenthal Mennonite Church where Peters served as song leader, teacher, and preacher until 1943. They then moved to Steinbach where Peters served the Steinbach Mennonite Church until his death on April 12, 1961.
This fonds contains one article written for the youth of Steinbach Mennonite Church and teaching notes on the disciple Peter's confession of faith in Matthew 16:13-18.
