Title: Michael Klaassen family fonds
Dates: 1847-[197-?]
Extent: 16 cm of textual records, 2 pieces of art and other materials.

Historical note

Michael Klaassen, church leader, teacher and farmer was born on August 26, 1860 in the village of Koeppenthal, Am Trakt Colony, South Russia. He was one of three surviving children born to Martin Klaassen (1820-1881) and Maria Hamm, grandson of Jakob Klaassen (1793-1879) and cousin of Rev. Jacob Klaassen (1867-1948). Michael was baptized by Aeltester David Hamm in 1877 and followed his parents to Central Asia in 1880 where he married Margaretha Jantzen in 1883. Michael's brother Jacob Klaassen has written about this experience which he entitled "Memories of a Journey".  Michael and Margaretha had eight children, two of whom died as infants. In 1885 they decided to emigrate to North America where they first settled near Beatrice, Nebraska, and then moved on to Bessie, Oklahoma in 1894 to homestead. During this time, Klaassen started a German and religion school, first for his children but then for other settlers. He was elected by Sichar Mennonite Church and ordained in 1896. In 1899 he organized Herold Mennonite Church, where he was made Aeltester in 1901. Klaassen and his wife, Margaretha, celebrated their Silver Wedding anniversary in 1909, one year before she died. He then married Katharina Dalke. Their marriage produced seven children, 2 of whom died in infancy. His son Johannes (John Klaassen) died tragically in prison during WWI on October 17, 1918 of the Spanish flu.  He had been sentenced to serve a 25 year term for being a conscientious objector. This event prompted Klaassen and a number of other families to leave the U.S.A. for Canada in 1918, where they settled near Morden, Manitoba. Here Klaassen organized another Herold Mennonite Church and conducted services in this congregation until 1927. Michael died on October 18, 1934.

Scope and content note

This fonds contains some Klaassen family genealogy work, diaries and memoirs (1859-1922), and many letters from Johannes, a son of Michael Klaassen, about his lot as a conscientious objector in the United States during World War I. There is a diary of the trek to central Asia in 1880 and the years that followed. The letters relate to the family's decision to relocate to Manitoba in 1918. There are sermons and sermon notes, and a one page school class schedule.Martin Klaassen sketched and painted two itmes.  One is the village of Tiegenhagen, Prussia and the other is the Johann Cornies estate of Juschanlee, Russia.

Notes

Custodial history

The materials in this fonds were passed on through various descendants of the family before being deposited at the Mennonite Heritage Centre. One file in this fonds was collected by David and Trudy Schellenberg of Winkler for the Christian Heritage Library.  In 2009 Harold Paetkau of Winnipeg deposited two items.  The two pieces of art work by Martin Klassen were passed down through the family.  In regards to the sketch of the Johann Cornies Juschanlee estate, it is unknown when this copy was made as the original is to have hung in the Tsar's palace.  This piece was owned by grandson Gustav Klaassen (1900-1988) who gave it to his son Jacob (1934- ) who gave it to his cousin Walter Klaassen (1926- ).  The painting of Tiegenhagen, Prussia is a photographic copy of the original which, in 1941 was owned by H.T. Klaassen (1898-1991), grandson of the artist.  Son Jacob (1928-2009) had the copy made and gave it to Gustav Klaassen who gave it to Walter Klaassen in 1985.

1. Village of Tiegenhagen, Prussia. - 1847,1871,1941. - 45 x 19 cm [col.].

This painted photograph is of the Prussia village Tiegenhagen which is the Klaassen ancestral village. The original was painted by Martin Klaassen. It is surmised that he sketched the village in 1847 (see date lower left) and then finished the art work in 1871 (see date lower right). Then in 1941 this copy was made in Morden, Manitoba. The image depicts a large flat plane in the foreground with people and animals working in the field harvesting. In the background are rows of trees, sailboats on the canal, windmill, houses, and a church with a tall spire. With the backing the piece is 52 x 25 cm. Encapsulated June 2009.

2. Sketch of Vorwerk Juschanlee. - [19-?]. - 41 x 16 cm [b&w].

This item is a copy of the original pencil sketch that depicts the Johann Cornies experimental farm known as Vorwerk Juschanlee, on the Juschanlee [Yushanlee] river near the city of Orloff [186-?]. The original was given to the Tsar and hung in his palace. The image depicts a rider herding horses in the lower left, a headsman with

cattle in lower front and another herdsman herding [sheep?] in the lower right. A rider on hose with sword drawn is riding towards the lower right. 16 well developed barns and other buildings are depicted with rows of trees in the background.
