Gerhard G. Epp fonds. -- 1944--1963. -- 34 cm of textual records.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:

Gerhard G. Epp (1895-1969), son of a Reverend Gerhard Epp, joined the Eigenheim Rosenorter Church, Saskatchewan in 1914. In 1918 he married widow Justina Wiebe. In 1919 his home congregation elected him as an evangelist. In 1923 he was ordained as a minister by Reverend David Toews and in 1929 as a bishop (Aeltester).

Gerhard G. Epp became a member of the Home Missions Committee of the Conference of Mennonites in Canada (CMC), replacing Aeltester Johann Gerbrandt in 1932. Epp served in this capacity until 1956 (with the exception of the years 1944-1946) -- many of them as secretary-treasurer. In 1945 he served for one year on the Bible schools committee, and in the following year he began serving as a CMC member of the Mennonite Central Relief Committee and remained active in it until 1959.

In 1948 Epp was elected as David Toews' successor on the General Conference Home Missions Board and held this position until 1959. One of the last committees that he served on was the Canadian Mennonite Bible College Board from 1957-1960.

CUSTODIAL HISTORY

The records in this collection were generated by G.G. Epp in his capacity as a member of various committees. They were deposited after 1965 but before 1974. It is unclear who brought them. Additional records were donated on April 3, 1995 by the family of G.G. Epp, namely Mrs. Trudy Schmidt of Rosthern, and Ewald Epp, publisher of Rosthern Valley News. Minister Henry Funk of Laird, Saskatchewan delivered these records.
