Historical note

The Nordheimer Mennonite Church of Saskatchewan was established by Mennonite immigrants from Russia who settled in the area 50 km south of Saskatoon in 1924. The church was established in 1925 with several local worship centres and one ordained bishop to oversee the work of the church. Meeting centres emerged at 4 locations -- Hanley, Dundurn, Pleasant Point, and Elbow. They each met in farm buildings until they could build or purchase their own meeting houses -- Pleasant Point in 1928, Hanley and Dundurn in 1929,and Elbow in 1954 The Elbow group dissolved in 1969 and most members joined the Hanley group. The Pleasant Point group did a major renovation of their meeting house in 1959. The Hanley group did a major renovation of their meeting house in 1956. The Dundurn group did a major renovation in 1959. The last bishop Gerhard Warkentin retired in 1972. The Nordheimer Gemeinde (multi-congregation church)dissolved in 1975. In 1976 the three independent congregations emerged --Dundurn, Hanley, and Pleasant Point. The leaders of this church were: Johann Klassen (1925-1949), Franz Epp (1930-1977), Daniel Loewen (1930), Abram Martens (1930-1932, 1934-1935), Gerhard Zacharias (1930, 1934, 1951-1974), Abram Kroeger (1931-1940), Wilhelm Wiens (1934-1963), Gerhard Warkentin (1943-1972), J. J. Schellenberg (1943-1981), Henry P. Schroeder (1944-1983), Nick Schroeder (1958-1986), Henry Peters (1958-1993), H. H. Patkau (1972-1982), Henry Kroeger (1972-1989), Werner Unrau (1971-1972), Rudy Daniels (1984-2000), Henry Sawatzky (1990- ), Margaret and Gary Peters (1994- ).

Scope and content note

This fonds consists of a comprehensive collection of congregation's records since its founding. Nordheimer Mennonite Church is comprised of the Hanley

Mennonite Church, the Dundurn Mennonite Church and the Pleasant Point Mennonite Church.

The materials were organized and listed by George Zacharias. His organization was left intact, but the following list was made by Jim Suderman, 31 July 1989, of the materials received. Microfilm projects #36 and #79 preceded this project (#150), and this project attempts to bring the microfilmed material up to ca. 1986. There may be some duplication of microfilming caused by somewhat imprecise inventories of Projects #36 and #79.

The following list shows where each item appears on the

Zacharias inventory, as well as on which microfilms each item appears and the volume numbers indicating where the originals are held at the MHC Archives.
