Historical note

Laird was one of the congregations of the Rosenorter Gemeinde in Saskatchewan that had a meeting house. The founder of this Gemeinde was Peter Regier (1851-1925). He had been appointed Ältester in 1887 in Prussia. He emigrated to Tiefengrund, Saskatchewan in 1893. Enough families had settled in the area so that in 1894 the Rosenorter Gemeinde of Saskatchewan had been founded. In 1909 their were enough families in the wider area to form districts with a minister in charge of each. One of these was Laird under the leadership of David Epp. They built their own meeting house in 1910. The congregations gained more independence over the years. In 1955 the Rosenorter Gemeinde split into two Gemeinden; namely, the Rosenorter and Vereinigten Mennoniten Gemeinden. Laird then belonged to the latter. The congregation became independent in 1962 when both Gemeinden dissolved. In 1963 the membership was 150. By 1990 the membership had dropped to 58 but then began increasing again. It stood at 109 in 2000. The leaders of the congregation were: David Epp (1911-1942), Cornelius Sawatzky (1928-1966), Isaac Penner (1941-1955), Arthur Pauls (1940-1969, 1971-1985), Arthur Friesen (1944-1960), Peter Funk (1963-1966), George Dueck (1970-1980), Gary Giesbrecht (1978-1980), Leonard Enns (1982), Irvin Schmidt (1983-1990), Barb and Wilmer Froese (1991- ).

Scope and content note

The fonds contains bulletins (1967-2018), directories (1979-1990), and annual reports (1979-1996, 2011) which document the activities of the leaders and participants of this congregation after it became an independant congregation.
