Historical note

The Wingham Mennonite congregation in Elm Creek, MB began services in each other’s homes in about 1930, and formally organized in 1938 with thirty-eight charter members. The first building was built and dedicated in 1939. Despite an addition being built in the 1940s, a new church building was built in 1961. In 1970, a group left to form an English-language EMMC church, which later dissolved. Cornelius Rempel is considered the founding leader of the group. The congregation originated through immigration from the Soviet Union. In 1985, there were 40 members; in 2000, 47. The congregation has been affiliated with Mennonite Church Manitoba. The language of worship is English; the transition from German occurred in 1967-77. Prior to 1982, Wingham was part of the Blumenorter church group, and was the only Blumenorter church outside the boundaries of the West Reserve. The church dissolved on April 25, 2004.

The leaders of the congregation were: Cornelius Rempel (1938-1945), Peter Fehr (1946-1965), Abram Epp (1965-1969), Johann Giesbrecht (?-?), Isaak Penner (?-?), Jakob Nikkel (?-?), Daniel D. Peters (1984-1993), Edward Funk (1994-1997), and Martin Sawatzky (1997-2004).
