Historical note

The former Secretary of Agriculture (1873-1874) in the federal government, John Lowe, purchased a large tract of land just north of the West Reserve which became known as Lowe Farm. John Lowe sold parts of the land to new settlers including Mennonites who began moving to the area in 1895. From 1900 till 1914 there were English worship service and German Sunday School activities with the Baptists. After 1917 the Sunday School consisted completely of Mennonites. The Bergthaler connection began with services in this area in 1905 which usually occurred monthly. Only in 1928 were the services regular enough to warrant their own meeting house which was completed that year. In 1947 this building was expanded. In 1964 a new larger meeting house was completed. The leaders of the congregation were: Wm. Heinrichs (1929-1936), D.D. Klassen (1935-1936), Peter Heinrichs (1937-1964), Peter Dueck (1957-1980), Johann Epp (1939-1943, 1945-1967), Jacob Klassen (1944-1945), Ernest Wiebe (1949-1957), Johann Heinrichs (1950-1951), George Gröning (1951-1953), Edward Funk (1972-1974), Peter Nickel (1975-1982), Peter Braun (1983), Glenn Nickerson (1984-1989), Henry Patkau (1990-1993), Art Hiebert (1994), Glenn Klassen (1995- ).

Scope and content note

This fonds consists of annual congregational meeting minutes (1940-1999), church council meeting minutes (1977-1999), annual reports (1966-1997, 1999), list of church officers (1990-1991, 1998) and weekly bulletins (1986-1999).
