Historical note

In the 1940s Mennonites in the Crystal City and Mather area met in private homes to worship. They were part of the Whitewater Gemeinde. In 1949 they built their own meeting house. In 1958 this building became the meeting house of the Mather group and they moved it to the Mather site. The Crystal City congregation built a new meeting house in Crystal City in 1958. The congregation remained a small congregation in this rural community after the Whitewater Gemeinde dissolved into the individual congregations. The leaders of the congregation were: Wilhelm Peters (1930-1934), Heinrich Janzen (1931-1935), Gerhard Bock (1946-1973), Johann Warkentin (1957-1967) [both Bock and Warkentin led the Mather congregation after the division], Peter Harms (1961-1967), Abe Reimer (1968-1980, 1983), Abe Buhler (1981-1982), Gary Giesbrecht (1984-1987), John Neufeld (1988, 1996-1997), George Derksen (1989-1994), Allen Harms (1995, 1998), Erwin Kroeker (1999- ).

Scope and content note

This fonds contains congregational bulletins (1968-2017), brief congregational history ([196-?]), open letter to the Prime Minister Mulroney on abortion ([198-?]), invitation to the 40th anniversary celebration (1988), list of charter members of the Crystal City and Mather congregation ([1958?]), and a list of congregational office holders (1998). The records pertains to the founding and development of the Mennonite congregation in Crystal City, Manitoba.
