Historical note

First United Mennonite Church in Vancouver, B.C. was founded in 1937 with 11 charter members. They purchased their own meeting house in 1937. In 1948 the membership was 97. In 1955 they purchased a new meeting house. In 1956 the membership was 259. The membership was 561 in 1974, 518 in 1986, 419 in 1993, and 345 in 2000. The leaders of the congregation were: Jacob H. Janzen (1935-1937), Jacob B. Wiens (1937-1975), David Doerksen (1937-1952), Johann Goertz (1937-1947), Bernhard B. Friesen (1946-1966), Heinrich Goertz (1951-1972), Peter Letkemann (1951-1967), Erwin Cornelsen (1961-1967), Heinz Braun (1968-1974), David Nickel (1969-1983), Peter Neufeld (1972-1990), Henry Unrau (1975-1976), Ken Kehler (1976-1980), Abram Harder (1976-1987), Gene Klassen (1977-1980), Hans Federau (1980-1992), Larry Schram (1982-1989), Hans Krueger (1986-1988), Hans Fast (1986-1997), Paul Boschmann (1989), Elden Wiebe (1990-1993), Jacob Tilitzky (1992-1993), Helmut Isaak (1993-), Pye Chew (1996-1999), Ingrid Schulz (2000- ).

This fonds contains bulletins (1974-1998), newsletters (1968-1999), congregational chronicle (1955-1977), congregational meeting minutes (1974-1999), church council meeting minutes (1981-1999), annual reports (1975-1990), directories (1971-1995), and a brief congregational history (1997). The records pertain to the founding and development of the Mennonite congregation in Vancouver, B.C. They document some of the leaders and participants in the congregation.
