Historical note

This congregation began worshipping in rented facilities in Vancouver, B.C. in 1951 and had their own meeting place in 1953. They began as an initiative of the Conference of Mennonites in British Columbia to have an English-language worshipping congregation in Vancouver. They were called the Vancouver Mennonite Mission Church. In 1967 the membership was 157. The congregation changed its name in 1972 to the Mountainview Mennonite Church. In 1977 they began a Chinese congregation which met in their meeting house until 1979. The membership was 153 in 1981 and 90 in 1995. The congregation was dissolved in 1996. The leaders of the congregation include: Henry Neufeld (1951-1956), Peter Kehler (1956-1958), Edgar Epp (1958-1959, 1967-1968), Bill Block (1959-1967), Jake Elias (1968-1974), Paul Boschman (1974-1981), Les Klassen (1982- ).

Scope and content note

This fonds contains bulletins (1953-1961, 1963-1996), annual reports ([196-?]-1986), constitutions ([196-?]-1978), directories (1976-1992), 25th anniversary book, Chinese bulletins (1978-1981), Japan Anabaptist Center brochure ([197-?]), draft commitment proposal (1979), newsletters (1984-1990), and a brief congregational history ([1958]). The records pertain to the founding and development and dissolution of the Mennonite congregation in Vancouver, B.C. They document some of the leaders and participants in the congregation.
